On June 28, 1969 a gay club in New York, The Stonewell Inn, was raided by the police. Countless people were arrested and pandemonium ensued. Protests broke out, and the ordeal lasted six days. The demand was clear, “give the LGBTQ community a place where they are safe from violence and abuse.”
Fifty-two years later, Pride Month is as important as any other holiday! Rather than allowing our differences to divide us, we must make equality and freedom something to share and celebrate. While there is greater recognition, understanding, and support for LGBTQ people in general, LGBTQ older adults often feel isolated and alone. Those residing in senior communities, receiving elderly services, home care services, or other senior care cannot always be honest about who they are. With an estimated three million LGBTQ older adults across the country, senior centers, home care providers, and senior assistance services play a vital role in supporting and connecting them. Everyone deserves to grow older with dignity and pride, and without having to hide who they are.
At Senior Alternatives, we strongly support LGBTQ rights and feel that older adults, who had to spend much of their life hiding, deserve to celebrate who they are. These aren’t special rights, but human needs that are just, fair, and moral. Age on with us as we celebrate Pride Month in the Bay Area.
