The Alzheimer’s Association has been working tirelessly to raise money to continue the research needed to find a cure. Today, there is no cure and the incidence of Alzheimer’s continues to grow exponentially. Between 2000 and 2016, deaths from Alzheimer’s rose by 139%.3 Additionally, there are 16 million unpaid caregivers providing care to loved ones, nearly 5% of the US population. 5,4 Care costs worldwide are estimated to be over one trillion dollars. In essence, this is one of the most critical public health issues we are facing.1,2 Yet, while there are three million published papers on cancer, there are only 250,000 papers written about dementia and neurodegeneration. Clearly more research is needed.1,2

Previously thought of as an elderly or senior citizen’s disease, those as young as 40 have been diagnosed with early-onset dementia. While this only accounts for 5% of the total, the numbers are likely to increase.1 When someone is an older adult, there is an expectation that some sort of memory loss, depression, or even mental illness might exist. It is important to understand this is not normal and immediately seek the help of a medical professional.5

The Alzheimer’s Walk is the most profitable event for the Alzheimer’s Association and depends heavily upon participation and fundraising to help meet their goals. This year the event is being held in San Ramon at 2700 Camino Ramon in Bishop Ranch.
