Celebrating Leadership & Legacy on International Women’s Day

March 7, 2025

On International Women’s Day, we honor not just the achievements of women across the world but also the inspiring stories of those who lead with passion, resilience, and a commitment to creating positive change. Today, we celebrate our Executive Director, Tanya Trapani, our fearless leader whose roots, values, and vision continue to shape our organization’s mission and impact.

A Journey Rooted in Culture and Advocacy

Born and raised on the Big Island of Hawaii, Tanya’s story is steeped in the rich traditions and values of Hawaiian culture. This upbringing instilled in her a deep appreciation for community, respect for elders, and the importance of holistic care for older adults. These early influences would ultimately shape her passion for eldercare and healthcare advocacy. She conducted her undergraduate studies at the University of Hawaii, where she acquired a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology.

A pivotal figure in her life is her mother, a trailblazer in her own right. During the 1960s, her mother emerged as a courageous advocate for women’s rights, long before conversations about gender equality had entered the mainstream. Living as one of the few white women in Hawaii during the 1970s, her mother demonstrated resilience, grace, and an unyielding work ethic. Her mother’s determination in working her way up the ladder in the hospitality industry was a tremendous inspiration. This powerhouse of a mentor taught Tanya the values of perseverance and the importance of fighting for what matters, lessons that have carried her through life and career.

Breaking Barriers and Redefining Leadership

Tanya began her professional career working for an investment advisory firm, where she excelled in a male-dominated field. Competing with her male counterparts revealed the structural and societal challenges many women face. However, rather than being discouraged, Tanya used these experiences as stepping stones, fueling her determination to push boundaries and rise above barriers. Her desire to create meaningful impact and further sharpen her expertise drove her to pursue an MBA, a move that set the stage for her future leadership roles.

Throughout her career, she has carried forward the values her mother instilled in her, combining hard work, empathy, and inclusivity to create environments where everyone can thrive. Her leadership style is a testament to the power of persistence, collaboration, and staying true to one’s core values.

Championing Change Within Our Organization

Since stepping into her role as Executive Director, Tanya has made an indelible impact on our organization. Influenced by her family roots and her deep respect for elders, she has prioritized initiatives that ensure empathy-driven care for older adults and foster a values-based approach within our team.

Her leadership is marked by her unwavering commitment to creating a workplace culture of equality and collaboration. Inspired by her mother’s advocacy, she has championed gender equality and actively empowered women within the organization. With a keen understanding of the challenges faced by women in the workplace, she has fostered an environment where ambition is nurtured, and achievements are celebrated.

Under Tanya’s direction, our organization has not only achieved milestones but has also strengthened its mission to serve older adults with integrity and compassion. Her dedication to elevating the voices of others and ensuring collective growth has truly set a benchmark for leadership.

A Legacy to Inspire

Tanya’s story is a powerful reminder of how our roots, influences, and determination can propel us forward and inspire change. On this International Women’s Day, we honor her for breaking barriers, challenging norms, and lighting the way for the next generation of women leaders. When asked about advice for young women getting started in business today she said the following: “Do not let anyone dictate what your limitations are or should be, always be a strong advocate for yourself and your personal growth.”

Our organization, Senior Alternatives is a woman owned and women managed endeavor, founded 30 years ago. Today, we thank our Founder and Managing Director, Janet Brush for her passion, drive, and vision. These stories are an inspiration to us all, and women in leadership reminds us of the impact one individual can have when guided by purpose and conviction.

As we reflect on the theme of International Women’s Day this year, may we all draw strength from the stories of many women around us who contribute to create a world where equality is not just an ideal but a reality for everyone.
